Why did you choose “the County”?
It’s in an ideal spot, just shy of a three-hour drive for both me (from Ottawa) and my sisters (from Toronto’s western suburbs).
Some of the County’s Pinot Gris makers leave the skins on their grapes for a little longer than usual, resulting in the uncharacteristic colour, as we learned during a visit the next day to Redtail Vineyard. Pauline Joicey and Gilbert Provost moved to the County from Luskville and opened the off-grid, organic winery in 2009. “We’re totally green,” Joicey said with pride as she simultaneously answered my questions and put the finishing touches on some canapés for a tour group, before hurrying to answer the phone. It’s an informal, charming and tiny winery.
